CHAPTER 18

“Is Elise coming to see me off?” Vasiliy picked up the long sword case from the floor by the double doors of Aleksandr’s reception room.

The one Vasiliy had given to Aleksandr rested on the side table along the wall behind him.

Aleksandr looked at the dark world outside the windows and then back at his brother. “The entire mansion will be seeing you off and you worry about one woman?”

“You are worried about her too, Brother.” Vasiliy toyed with the silver latches on the black case. “Do you know where she is?”

Aleksandr glanced at the tall sash windows again. He didn’t know where Elise was. She hadn’t reported to him tonight with the other guards and he hadn’t seen her when he had gone down to Ladislav’s reception room to tell Vasiliy to leave.

Commander Piotr had been there and informed him that Elise had gone out with some of the others.

She wasn’t alone, but the company she had chosen left much to be desired.

Andrej.

“That was not what she told me you said last night.” Aleksandr crossed the room to Vasiliy, his footsteps heavy on the hardwood floor, and stood toe-to-toe with him. “You mentioned something about my changing.”

Vasiliy looked away again, fidgeted with the case latches, and then sighed and met his gaze. “It is true. I asked her to watch over you, and do what was necessary if it came to it.”

Aleksandr growled, grabbed his brother by the throat and slammed him against the wall beside the door.

“You asked her to kill me!” He clenched his teeth, fighting his desire to shake sense into his brother. “How could you do such a thing to her?”

He pulled Vasiliy away from the red wall and then shoved him back against it, causing the doors to rattle and Vasiliy to drop his sword case.

“How dare you ask her to do something like that?”

Vasiliy choked and wheezed through Aleksandr’s tight grip on his throat. “Because I knew you would not, even when you would want to die by her hand.”

Aleksandr tossed him aside and paced across the room, needing to distance himself in case he lost control and hurt Vasiliy. He would never forgive himself if he did. He loved his brother but it
